Using as the starting point interviews with actors, directors and playwrights, as well as the analysis of both published and unpublished manuscripts, this study brings to light several projects and experiences of various Mexican theater groups working between 1970 and 1985 in the so-called “popular theater”. The author assigns categories according to how the groups work and how they survive: State Popular Theater (CONASUPO Theater, Popular Scenic Art, and INEA Popular Theater); Proletarian Popular Theater (CLETA); and Independent Popular Theater (Grupo Cultural Zero and Felipe Santander). The author carried out this research as a doctoral thesis on Latin American Literature at the University of Arizona (1985).
